HVAC Energy-Saving Tips for Spring & Summer

Your HVAC system is an essential part of your Chicagoland home. Keeping your home warm in the fall and winter and cool in the spring and summer, without it, life would get pretty miserable—even dangerous.

The downside of your HVAC system? How much it costs to run, especially in the warmer months. The average homeowner spends over $2,000 a year on energy bills, with roughly half of that being accounted for in the heating and cooling system. Luckily, there are spring and summer energy-saving tips that can keep you cool at a lower cost. Here are just a few, coming to you from our HVAC company in Palatine.

#1: Have Your AC Inspected in April

Usually, the hot weather doesn’t start to hit the Chicagoland area until April, and it isn’t typically consistent until May. That means this is a great time to have your heating and cooling team in Hinsdale head on over to assess your AC system and make any tune-ups that could help it work more efficiently.

#2: Use Your Windows

A great HVAC tip for summer is to use your windows whenever possible. Keep them open at night, then close them in the morning to trap the cold air inside your home. This should let you turn on your AC later in the day and use it for fewer hours overall.

#3: Reduce Heat From Lights

Depending on the types of bulbs you use, they could be adding a few degrees to the temperature of your home. While it is best to switch to more energy-efficient bulbs, a quicker and cheaper way to manage this heat is to open your curtains and rely on natural light during the day.

#4: Avoid the Oven

Baking is fun, and a great summer activity for the kids, but it also heats up your home. An excellent HVAC summer energy-saving tip is to avoid using your oven as much as possible, and when you do, stick to after dark when the windows are open and your home is cool.

#5: Use Your Dryer Less

Your clothes dryer produces a lot of heat, and while some of that should be directed out the vent, some will remain in your home. If possible, line dry your clothes and only use the dryer to fluff them. This is a great way to save energy during summer since the weather is great for line drying.
If you are ready to lower your energy bills this summer, start with AC maintenance Elmhurst. Call our heating and maintenance company in Hinsdale to schedule yours.
