Combi Boilers vs. System Boilers

What type of hot water heater is best for your home?

If you aren’t into home improvement shows or a plumber yourself, you might not realize how many different types there are. You need to choose between electric and gas heaters, and even the addition of solar panels for hot showers on sunny days.

Two other options to choose between? Combi boilers and system boilers.

If you are struggling with the decision process, our boiler service in Palatine is here to help. Keep reading to get the key facts you’ll need to make your decision.

What Is a Combi Heating System?

Most people are unfamiliar with the term combi boiler. More common is the term tankless water heater. While there are some differences between the two, for the most part, these can be used interchangeably.

A combi boiler is a water heater that lacks a storage tank. Water is heated when it is needed, with the boiler warming it when the tap is turned on, pulling water directly from your mains. With the right setup, the combi boiler can handle heating your home as well.

Because they heat water on demand, homes with multiple bathrooms can exceed the capabilities of a combi boiler, at least when multiple sinks and showers are being used at one time. They are typically used in smaller homes, not only because of their limitations but also because they are so small, they can fit inside a cabinet.

What Is a System Boiler?

This is what many think of as a traditional water heater. It has a tank, and that tank holds water that is constantly heated, sitting there waiting for the tap to turn on. These water heaters come in various sizes but most are large enough that they cannot be placed inside a kitchen cabinet.

System boilers must be well insulated to function properly. When they aren’t, the water will not achieve the proper temperature. They are ideal for larger properties and those with multiple bathrooms.

Combi Boiler vs. System Boiler

Now that you know the system and combi boilers’ pros and cons, you have to decide which is best for you. Really, it all comes down to the water demand in your home. Do you have a single bathroom and don’t use a lot of hot water for the dishwasher and laundry? Then the combi boiler will be the more economical and convenient choice. Do you have multiple bathrooms or otherwise have a high demand for hot water? The system boiler is the option for you.
