5 Signs That Your Air Conditioner Could Be Making You Sick

Summer is in full swing, which means one thing – air conditioning! While AC is a lifesaver during the hot summer months, it can also make you sick. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, your AC could make you sick: headaches, nausea, dizziness, eye irritation, or skin problems. Keep reading for information on how to stay healthy during the summer months.

1) Mold Growth

According to the EPA, mold can grow anywhere there’s moisture, and it loves to grow in air conditioning systems. If you see mold or mildew growing on or around your AC unit, the system isn’t draining properly and needs to be serviced. But even if you don’t see mold, it could still be in the system and circulating throughout your home. If you have mold allergies, this could be making you sick.

Mold spores can cause various respiratory problems, including coughing, sneezing, congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, and difficulty breathing. They can also cause headaches and dizziness.

2) Skin, Eye, and Throat Irritation

Skin problems are the most common sign that your AC makes you sick. If you start breaking out in hives or get rashes more frequently, it could be a reaction to the dust and dirt in the air not being filtered by your AC unit.

Eye irritation can also be caused by allergens in the air, as well as dryness. If the eyes feel dry and irritated, it could be a sign that the AC unit isn’t humidifying the air properly.

A scratchy throat can also be a sign of allergies or a reaction to dry air. If you find yourself constantly clearing your throat or coughing, it might be time to get your AC unit checked out.

3) Excessive Fatigue

If you are exhausted, even after a whole night’s sleep, it could signal that your AC makes you sick. Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of exposure to poor indoor air quality, and it can be exacerbated by other health conditions like allergies or asthma.

According to EPA, indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air, so if you’re feeling extra tired, it might be time to take a closer look at your indoor air quality.

You can do things to improve the air quality in your home, like investing in an air purifier or opening windows to let fresh air in. You can also have your ducts cleaned by a professional to remove any dust or allergens circulating through your AC system.

4) Dehydration

When the body cannot regulate its temperature, it can begin to sweat excessively. The fluid loss can lead to dehydration, which causes a whole host of problems, including dizziness, headaches, and fatigue. If your AC unit is not maintained correctly, it can circulate bacteria and mold spores that can cause respiratory infections.

To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of water when the temperature is hot, and the AC is running. You may invest in a humidifier to add moisture to the air.

5) Increase in Blood Pressure

If your blood pressure seems to be spiking for no reason, it could be because of the air conditioner. When the air is too cold, your body goes into survival mode and tries to warm itself up. The response can cause an increase in blood pressure.

If you think your AC is making you sick, call Unique Indoor Comfort. Our team offers expert air conditioning repair in Palatine for all makes and models.
